Selecting a Chinese Shar-Pei Puppy

• We would like to think that each and every person considering the purchase of a puppy has put some thought into, and has investigated the breed they are thinking of selecting.  Reputable breeders of Chinese Shar-Pei’s are concerned about the well-being of every puppy, or dog they place in a new home.  As Alberta Chinese Shar-Pei Kennel owners, here are some guidelines and facts about the breed, and some considerations we would wish you to examine before you purchase a Shar-Pei.
  
  You are making a major commitment of time and resources.   A Shar-Pei puppy is not cheap.  Where some puppies can be purchased for a few hundred dollars, most well bred Shar-Pei puppies run into the thousands, especially if you are interested in “pick of the litter” or “show quality.”  Chinese Shar-Pei live an estimated 8 to 10 years.   During his life he will be totally dependent on you for his health and happiness.  Shar-Pei have a harsh coat.   Handling some Shar-Pei can cause a rash in some individuals.   This condition does usually disappear with continued exposure.Some Shar-Pei slobber when they are hot or excited, or after eating and drinking.Some Shar-Pei develop entropion, a turning of the eyelid that may have to be surgically corrected.  Shar-Pei snort and snore.
   
  Now that you have learned some of the idiosyncrasies common to the Shar-Pei, and are sure that the Shar-Pei temperament is compatible with your lifestyle, here are some of the many positive things you can look forward to as a Shar-Pei owner:
  
  The Shar-Pei shed very little.
• They almost housebreak themselves.
• They do require some help from you such as opening doors at reasonable time periods.
• They do not wander.
• They are not barkers.
• They are deeply loyal and devoted companions.
• They are excellent watch dogs.

Responsible breeders will help you find the right dog for you.  Different kennels will have dogs with different looks.  Certain kennels are breeding for coats, color or a host of other characteristics.  There are reputable breeders in all the major cities in Alberta, and in many out lying areas.
